Girls Track and Field Coaches of the Year
East Lansing’s Pollard, Brown honored

Charles Pollard has been coaching girls track for 34 years and Bob Brown for 30 years at East Lansing High.
But weeks ago in Division 2, they claimed their first state championship trophy.
“It’s something most coaches dream about, and some coaches go a lifetime and not have happen to them,” Pollard said. “We were very fortunate to have a group of ladies so talented come together.”
The Trojans finished in fifth place with 34 points a year ago.
“The girls made it a goal to improve on that, and I knew it was possible to win,” Pollard said. “But there are so many things that can happen at a state meet.
“We just wanted the girls to work hard, do the best they could and see what happened.”
Throughout the meet, the running score was updated.
“I knew we were in the lead, but I didn’t expect to stay there,” Pollard said. “I knew we didn’t have a 4 x 400 (1600-meter) relay (the last event). So we knew other teams would be coming on strong.”
East Lansing finished with 36 points and just two more than DeWitt’s total. Chelsea followed with 31 points, Detroit Renaissance 30, Sexton 29 and Middleville-Thornapple Kellogg 28 for a total of six teams within eight points.
