Gentle nudge is all Plainwell’s Brandon Zeluff needed

PLAINWELL — After a childhood accident that shattered both of his heels, Brandon Zeluff was told by his doctor that he would never become a track star.

And he never did.

Cross country is more of his thing. After finishing 10th in 16:45 at Saturday’s regional meet at Portage West Middle School, the Plainwell senior has punched his ticket to the state meet this Saturday at the Michigan International Speedway in Brooklyn.

Zeluff loved running as a child, but a scary accident at age four put his ability to ever run again in jeopardy.

“I was upstairs in our barn, and my dad was on the balcony. So I joined him. I was looking out for deer,” Zeluff recalled. “For some reason I thought it would be a good idea to lean on the railing even though I was always told not to. I remember hitting the ground and bending my knees and feeling like someone put dynamite in my boots and lit it on fire.”
