Four Washtenaw County teams place in top 10 at Division 1 state finals

By this time of the year, most track teams have seen and heard everything they're going to. That's why it was so surprising that the Saline and Ann Arbor Pioneer girls track teams were hearing something neither had all season on at the MHSAA Division 1 state finals.

The leader board was announced after 12 events at Rockford high School and neither the Hornets or Pioneers had their totals read. Both were out of the top 10, and seemingly out of contention.

Not having their names called was completely foreign to the teams, both of whom had all but dominated competition all season.

“It was kind of weird, then you start looking around and you're like ‘I'm with some of the best athletes,' ” said Saline senior Kate Carter, who collected three all state medals finishing third in the 800 run and running on Saline's fourth place 3,200 and 1,600 relay teams. “I feel blessed to finish off the season with some hardware.”

After Sophia Kunselman and Angela Renfroe placed third and second in the 300-meter hurdles, Pioneer catapulted from 11th to fourth place between the 12th and 13th events, which is where they would remain, finishing with 33 points. Rochester won with 65 points.
