GRANDVILLE — Forest Hills Eastern senior Erik Bates was the first runner to cruise to the finish line Tuesday in the O-K Gold Conference meet. And his teammates weren’t far behind him.

Forest Hills Eastern took the top four spots in the boys race, led by Bates, who won in a time of 16 minutes, 56 seconds at Johnson Park.

Following Bates were seniors Garrett Cullen (17:03), Chad Scott (17:04) and junior Spencer Ferris (17:08).

“It was great to take the four spots, and we’ve only done it once this season,” Bates said. “We were really looking to do that so we can establish a foundation for future success.

“It’s really all about the team, and pushing each other makes each of us faster. I couldn’t have done it without my teammates.”

The Hawks’ strong showing enabled it to win the final conference meet with 34 points. Caledonia finished runner-up with 48 points and South Christian (85) nipped Catholic Central (95) for third place.

Forest Hills Eastern, ranked No. 5 in Division 2, went unbeaten at 7-0 in duals and won its fifth consecutive conference championship.

“That was the plan — to go 1,2,3,4,” FHE coach Jeremy Hurley said. “The boys have won the (conference) championship ever since the school opened, and it’s something that we pride ourselves on and we talk about.

“I encourage them to go for it, but we also want to continue to look higher than that, too.”

FHE’s girls had five runners finish in the top 10 and won with 27 points, wrapping up the Gold title after going 7-0 in dual competition.
