EAST KENTWOOD GIRLS WIN REGIONALS: On the strength of three medalists, the East Kentwood girls cross country team won their regional meet this past Saturday at Portage West Middle School in Portage.
“I told the girls that this is what we’ve worked all year for,” said coach Ray Antel. “We’ve overcome a lot this year in terms of injury and the flu, but luckily our puzzle pieces are interchangeable and we came out on top.”
Leading the charge for the Falcons was junior Alissa Williams who finished first overall with a time of 18:11.8, setting both a school and personal record. Coming in second for the Falcons and third overall was senior captain Krista Parks who crossed the finish line at 18:50, and finishing third for the team and fifth overall was junior Leah Shepherd who ended with a time of 19:25.
The team heads to Brooklyn, Michigan next week for the state finals where, according to Antel, a top-five finish would be just fine with him.
“I’m telling everyone that the ‘feel good’ races are over,” he said. “The state meet is where they’ll have to run their personal best, and I think the girls are ready to do just that.”
