EAST KENTWOOD GIRLS WIN REGIONAL TITLE: The Falcon girls track team may be young, but they are talented and appear to be peaking at the right time.

East Kentwood topped the 16-team field with 158.5 points, nearly 60 ahead of second-place Grandville. The Falcons only list two seniors on their roster and those two came up big to help the team win at regionals. Amanda Impellizzeri won the pole vault and placed fifth in discus, while fellow senior Chanese Mendenhall took top honors in the 100-meter dash and anchored the winning 400-meter relay team. Mendenhall’s relay teammates were Lameeka Davis, Aubree Suor and Brittany Terry, while Mendenhall, Davis, Terry and Ashley Liggins placed second in the 800 relay as well.

Suor also placed second in the high jump, long jump and 300-meter hurdles, freshman Katie Rancourt was third in the high jump and pole vault, Ayanna Stancle was second in discus and third in shot put, Liggins was third in the 300 hurdles, and Alissa Williams and Krista Parks were first and second respectively in the 3200-meter run.

“We’re very pleased with the day,” said East Kentwood coach Stephanie Stephenson. “This was probably the best meet we’ve had as far as all of the girls having great performances.”

The Falcons qualified a large number of individuals and relays for the state finals which they will host on May 30th, and also qualified as a team for the MITCA “team state” meet at Jenison this Saturday. EK finished second to arch-rival Rockford at the meet a year ago.

“We will get out there and do our best,” said Stephenson. “The girls will compete hard and hopefully we can come out on top.”

The Falcon boys win a regional as well and will attempt to defend their MITCA title and to improve on last year’s second-place finish at the state finals.
