East Grand Rapids boys track team ends two-year losing skid with win against Lowell

The East Grand Rapids boys track and field team won its first dual meet in two years Thursday, edging Lowell 73-62.

“It was fun,” first-year Pioneers coach Charles DeWildt said. “The guys did a really nice job.”

EGR's previous victory came in 2008 against Forest Hills Central.

The host Pioneers ended that streak behind double-winner Jake Billet, who won the shot (40-feet, 10 1/2 inches) and the discus (132-0), Adam Lohner and Brandon Selberg, who went 1-2 in the pole vault, both clearing 9-6.

Selberg also won the high jump (5-10). Senior Max Zimmerman finished second in the long jump (17-7 3/4).

“We had a couple of guys who really stepped up for us,” DeWildt said. “Max Zimmerman is a first-year guy and he had never long-jumped before. He had literally never long jumped, he hadn't even practiced, and he finished second.

“It was a miserable night for the long jump and the pole vault, too, because it was right into the wind.”

EGR's Robbie Smith won the 800 meters in 1:59.92.
