East girls take third at Division 2 state meet

ADVANCE NEWSPAPERS, November 07, 2010 3:08 p.m.

East Grand Rapids’ two-year reign as the Division 2 girls cross country state champion came to and end at Michigan International Speedway Saturday, but Pioneers coach Nick Hopkins said he couldn’t have been happier with his team’s third-place finish.

“I’m ecstatic about that finish, no question,” Hopkins said. “We ran our best race of the year. You tend to get a little spoiled with state championships at East, but this team was third in the regional and then finished third at state. It’s a wonderful accomplishment for these girls after graduating six of the top seven runners from last year’s team.”

O-K White Conference champion Grand Rapids Christian won the state title with a team total of 111 points. Hamilton was second at 116, while East, which finished second to Christian in the O-K White, was third with 177.

“The O-K White represented at state again,” Hopkins said. “When third place at state is a little unsettling, you know you’re doing something right.”
