Cameron Dobson said he felt he could have done better at the Division 2 state cross country meet.

But after a little more thought, the Croswell-Lexington junior figured an all-state finish in his first year of running cross country was pretty good.

Dobson finished 17th Saturday at Michigan International Speedway, leading the Pioneers to a 14th-place finish. For his efforts, Dobson is the Times Herald Athlete of the Week.

“I kind of thought I was going to get in the 20s,” Dobson said. “In the last little bit, they had a mat that showed the 3-mile mark, and that’s when I started to sprint.
“That really paid off for catching and passing kids. There were some kids that were dead.”

Dobson has run track since the seventh grade but joined the cross country team for the first time this season. He was the team’s No. 1 runner throughout the year.

“That just kind of demonstrates what kind of an athlete he is,” Cros-Lex Coach Rick Shaw said. “He ran well all season, and he’d been gearing up for that meet.

“I knew he was going to be good from watching him run in the past. He’s a racer. He gets up for the big meets.”

Dobson said MIS was “really big” and a little overwhelming. But since his teammates had been there before, he had been briefed on what to expect.

Runners finish the race in the stadium after starting just outside it. That makes for an exciting, but long, finish.
