Depleted Vicksburg squad wins Wolverine Conference boys cross country title

THREE RIVERS — The Vicksburg boys cross country team proved why it is ranked No. 2 in the state at the Wolverine Conference championship meet on Tuesday.

On a day when two of the team’s top five runners were out due to illness and injury, the Bulldogs did what back-to-back conference champions do – win anyway.

Vicksburg, which was paced by Mark Beams’ second-place finish (16:40), claimed its third straight Wolverine Conference crown with 47 points – outdistancing second-place Otsego (63).

Plainwell’s Morgan Timiney edged Beams to post a 16-second margin of victory with a time of 16:24

Vicksburg coach Dave Smith said this title meant a little extra to him and the team.

“This one feels really good,” he said. “Two of our top five were out. But we told them from the beginning we can’t use that as an excuse. You got to go with it, and they rose to the occasion.”

With Ryan Bowman and John Stokes unable to run, Danny Hughes and Jake Andrews stepped up for Vicksburg with third- and sixth-place finishes.
Hughes, a sophomore, ran a 17:14.

“We had to stay strong mentally and physically,” he said. “There’s a lot of hills. It takes a lot of quad strength and mental strength.”
