David Watson, Eric Thompson power Bangor boys cross country team

MARCELLUS — David Watson and Eric Thompson don’t have the look of typical cross country runners.

At first glance, it seems they should be lining up at linebacker for the Bangor football team, not at the starting line of a cross country meet.

But Watson and Thompson powered the Vikings to a conference title by finishing second and third respectively at the third and final Southwestern Athletic Conference Jamboree Wednesday at Marcellus High School.

“They have got a fairly similar running style,” coach Brian Price said. “You know, they’re big kids. They’re not the little, skinny typical distance kid, but they run with power. I like to have kids like that. I like those kids that get out and just pound.”

Watson finished with a 16:39 for his best time out of the three conference meets this season and was the conference runner-up to Saugatuck’s Ethan Lievense, who ran a 16:17 on the day.
