Dakota and Armada both followed similar paths as they entered uncharted territory at Saturday’s Macomb County Boys Cross Country Championships.

The Cougars, who ended De La Salle’s four-year reign in Division 1, and the Tigers, who led the Division 2-3-4 field, each won their first county meet championships by focusing on the team and not individual achievements.

“I figured if we had five in the top 20 we had a legitimate chance to win it,” Dakota coach Mike Timpa said. “Having a group of kids who can train together, run together and race together is going to be huge if you’re going against a team with a few front runners like De La Salle. That’s our strength at this point.”

Dakota finished with 67 points in the meet at Stony Creek Metropark, while runner-up De La Salle had 98. Romeo was third with 136 points, followed by L’Anse Creuse North 144 and Utica 179.
