Cross Country teams run in San Diego

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The Albion College men’s cross country team faced a 10K course in the Triton Classic, but the Britons ran in a tight pack with 37 seconds separating the first and fifth runners. Albion finished fifth out of nine teams in the meet, posting a total of 128 points.

Deion Pruitt (Ann Arbor/Ann Arbor Huron), as he has all season, led the Britons. He was the 21st runner to cross the finish line with a time of 34:47. Coach Hayden Smith said Nick Shaheen (Flint/Powers) ran the finest race of his collegiate career with a time of 34:55.7.

Matt Melvin (Bangor/Bangor), Drew Fuentes (Grand Junction/Bangor), and Taylor Polzin (Sturgis/Stugis) completed Albion’s top five. Melvin crossed the finish line in 35:09.3, Fuentes’ time was 35:21.3, and Polzin completed the course in 35:25.5.

Erika Nichols (Greenville/Greenville) and Amanda Weaver (Marshall/Marshall) led the women’s team to ninth place in a field of 13 teams. Nichols completed the 6K course in 24:10.4, and Weaver crossed the finish line in 24:30.5.

Emily McLaughlin (Grosse Pointe/Grosse Pointe South) crossed the finish line in 26:22.7, Lindsay Way (Mount Pleasant/Mount Pleasant) posted a time of 26:40.2, and Amanda Miley (Redford/Redford) completed the course in 27:09.1.

“We ran some outstanding races,” Smith said. “The times were well below our best times from our trip to San Diego a few years ago.”

Albion will run in the Mult-Region Invitational at Oberlin (Ohio) College Oct. 17.
