ADRIAN, Mich. – The Albion College cross country teams previewed the course to be used for the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Championships later this month when they competed in the Great Lakes Region Short & Long Course Championships at Lenawee Christian High School.

First-year runner Deion Pruitt (Ann Arbor/Ann Arbor Huron) kept his footing on the course softened by rain, winning the men’s 5K race in 16:44.62. Matt Melvin (Bengor/Bangor) was the ninth runner to cross the finish line, posting a time of 17:06.89. Carl Wharam (Manchester/Manchester) was 11th with a time of 17:12.18.

Albion finished second out of four teams in the men’s 8K event. The Britons’ 36-point total was four points off the pace set by Adrian College. Ben Alger (Grass Lake/Grass Lake) was the first Briton to finish, coming in fourth overall, at 27:59.45.

Coach Hayden Smith was pleased that just a minute separated Albion’s top five runners. Alger was followed by Andrew Fuentes (Grand Juction/Bangor) with a seventh-place time of 28:34.74, Taylor Polzin (Sturgis/Sturgis) at 28:51, Nick Shaheen (Flint/Powers) at 28:54.29, and Aaron Croad (Novi/Novi) at 28:58.81.
