GRAND RAPIDS — Matt Hight’s run brought tears to his coach’s eyes.

The Creston senior won the final O-K White Conference race of the season Tuesday at Riverside Park with a time of 16 minutes 56 seconds — 12 seconds better than runner-up Jacob Kuyvenhoven of Grand Rapids Christian.

“I was pumped up all day for this,” said Hight, whose previous best finish was fourth last week in a conference jamboree. “And when I got here, I had a feeling that I would do well. I just went out with some kids early, and then during the second mile I took off.”

That burst made Creston coach Sue Vanderlende proud of what Hight accomplished. After the race, she acknowledged to some Creston fans her eyes welled up as he crossed the finish line.

“Is what he did awesome, or what?” Vanderlende asked. “He set his mind that he knew he could come here and do this, and he went out and did it. This was huge for our program.”

Tuesday marked the last of four conference jamborees.

The Grand Rapids Christian boys won with 20 points, 62 better than runner-up East Grand Rapids. Creston finished third with 86 points.

The East Grand Rapids girls team, the defending Division 2 state champion, won the conference race with 21 points, 21 better than second-place Grand Rapids Christian.
