KENTWOOD — The state track and field finals always make for a long day.

It’s hard to imagine it getting much longer than it was for Tyler Grob though.

The Pinckney senior began Saturday pole vaulting at the Division 1 finals at 9:30 a.m. He wrapped it up by running in the final event of the day, the 1,600-meter relay, at around 6 p.m. In between, he ran the 400 relay and the 300 hurdles.

Grob finished third in the pole vault, clearing 14 feet, 10 inches, tying him for the top finish by a county athlete at the state meet with his teammate Matt Wines, who finished third in the 1,600, and the Brighton girls 3,200 relay team.

The third-place finish, though, was bittersweet for Grob, who will head to Saginaw Valley State University next year to compete in the decathlon.

“I told everyone I would win and I didn’t, so it’s disappointing,” Grob said, “but I had a good day.”
