Jerry Baltes occasionally hears from people who wonder why his coaching career does not include a national championship.

That missing feat on his resume — and more importantly, the team’s history — could be filled next month.

The Grand Valley State women’s cross country team, which finished second to Adams State last season, is ranked second in the nation behind Chico State (Calif.), and there is widespread thought in the running community this might be the Lakers’ year.

Baltes, GVSU’s 11th-year coach, takes it all in stride.

“We’ve won everything we entered this season,” Baltes said. “We won at Notre Dame by 80 points, we were one point away from perfection at the Michigan Intercollegiates and we were perfect at the Vanderbilt Invitational.””This is probably the best chance we’ve had at winning the title in the last few years. We’ve got a lot of girls who are building on good seasons from last year. Just the experience alone and the training is starting to pay off.”
