MONICA KINNEY AND ANTHONY WITT of Grand Valley earned the first Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference indoor track athlete of the week honors for men and women. Kinney, a senior who was a former standout at West Catholic, crossed the finish line for the 5K in 16 minutes, 13.81 seconds, setting a record previously held by eight-time champion Mandi Zemba. Witt, a senior, finished third in the 5K in 14:08.72, setting a provisional-qualifying mark and missing the automatic qualifier by 4 seconds.

RACHEL PATTERSON AND SAM LOCKHART of Grand Valley also had strong performances at the GVSU Early Bird Open. Patterson, a freshman, automatically qualified in the 5K with a runner-up time of 16:15.83. Lockhart, a junior, also set records in the shot put (14.81 meters) and the weight throw (19.66 meters). It was a provisional qualifying mark in the shot put and an automatic qualifier in the weight throw.

THE GRAND VALLEY STATE men’s indoor track team also kicked off its season with the GVSU Early Bird Open last week, and junior Donny Stiffler led the way with two NCAA provisional qualifying marks with wins in shot put (15.97 meters) and weight throw (17.56 meters).
