Calvin’s cross-country teams kicked off their season Saturday with successful runs at the Knight Invite.

On their home cross-country course amidst perfect racing conditions, the women harriers raced to a team victory, while the men impressed fans with their second place showing.

The women’s team entered the meet with high hopes and a No. 2 national ranking. They were not, however, the only team worthy of national attention; No. 14 Case Western Reserve was expected to provide the Knights with some competition.

Yet Calvin’s women did not disappoint, running to another dominating performance which the home crowd has almost come to expect. The team placed five runners in the top 10 to score 28 points, well ahead of Case Western’s second-place score of 91.

“We obviously have a good deal of talent and depth,” head coach Brian Diemer said. “There were some gaps that we’ll have to work on, but that’s why you run some meets to prepare for that.”
