Chiefs on right track thanks to A-1 captains

The food is fantastic and the camaraderie is even better at the Canton boys track-and-field team’s annual season-ending picnic at

But the highlight of the festivities is the naming of the following year’s captains — a time-honored ritual that draws the attention of all attendees.

Last spring, the honorees — who were selected by a vote of their teammates and coaches — were seniors Sherif Hassanien, Josh Hurst, Ryan Randall and Eddie Koelzer, a fantastic foursome who have more than lived up to the awesome responsibilities that were thrust upon them.

“This is a great group of captains,” said Canton coach Bob Richardson. “They’ve really lived up to their leadership roles, both on the track and with the way they’ve helped make the rest of the team better.”

Koelzer is a four-year member of the track team and three-sport athlete, who has also earned letters in swimming and football. A standout pole vaulter, Koelzer said the feeling of being named captain was as prominent as any medal he’s one the past four years.
