BENZONIA – Considering what they have had to overcome, it was not a bad day for the Charlevoix High School cross country teams.

Not a bad day indeed.

The Rayder boys finished third to qualify for the state finals, while the Rayder girls placed fourth, missing out on qualifying for a trip to Michigan International Speedway by seven points Saturday in the Division III regional at Benzie Central High School.

Charlevoix’s Molly Jeakle placed 10th in the girls’ race to earn a trip to the state finals as an individual.

Both Rayder squads went into the regional on the tail end of a long battle with illness.

“We ran really well considering the sicknesses,” Charlevoix boys’ coach Ken Plude said. “We did very well considering that. Our top four were healthy. (Alex) Gooch, who is our fifth man, that was his first race back and he got within 17 seconds of his personal best. Can’t argue with that.”

Benzie Central swept the team titles. The Huskie boys, ranked third in the state coaches poll, finished with 35 points, while Mason County Central, 59; was second, and the Rayders finished with 65.

The Benzie girls, also ranked third, finished with 27 points to easily outdistance runner-up Kingsley, 89. Leroy Pine River, 102, was third, while the Rayders finished fourth with 109.
