Newby II | The Grand Rapids PressCOMSTOCK PARK — James Putnam and the Cedar Springs boys track team learned a valuable lesson last year.If you slow down, someone, or some team, will pass you by in the OK Blue Conference.Heading into the 2009 conference meet, Putnam and the Red Hawks were comfortably in first place after an undefeated regular season. But in the meet, Cedar Springs finished in fourth place, and Sparta and West Catholic passed the Red Hawks and wound up sharing the overall conference championship.”We were disappointed last year, but we went into that meet and gave it our all,” said Putnam, a junior sprinter for Cedar Springs, who was a major contributor last season. “It didn't work out, but we have some good competition in the OK Blue and you have to keep your foot on the pedal and never let up.”Sprint forward to this year, and the Red Hawks find themselves in a similar situation after sweeping Sparta 83-54 and host Comstock Park 87-50 Tuesday in the conference's final night of regular-season triangulars. On May 14 and 15 teams in the OK Blue will compete in the conference meet at Sparta.
