HOLLY, Michigan — Holly senior Brendan Lagios has competed in enough big events this school year that he wasn’t going to be intimidated by anyone.

Not even a defending state champion.

So, when Lagios made it through the final turn in the 800-meter run, he seized the opportunity before him. He exploded down the final straightaway to pass Joe Reynolds of Rochester Adams and win the metric half mile in the Division 1 regional track and field meet Friday at Holly.

Lagios won with a time of 1:53.71, faster than the 1:53.92 that Reynolds ran to win the state meet last season. Reynolds was second Friday in 1:55.70.

“Everybody said he was the best,” Lagios said. “To be the best, you have to beat the best.
