Area runners take part in cross country state finals

BROOKLYN — The Bad Axe girls team, as well as several other area individuals, took part in the cross country state finals this past weekend here at Michigan International Speedway.

As a team, the Bad Axe girls placed 22nd overall in the Division 3 event.

“That was a good representation for us in the state,” said Bad Axe coach Lee Kahler. “There are 150 schools in our division in the state.”

Individually, HarborBeach’s Ali Wessels had the area’s top finish. The senior standout placed seventh overall in the Division 4 race, finishing in 19.51.8.

For the Bad Axe girls, Cassie Hanson was 107th in 21:24, followed by Breann Schramski in 132nd (21:51), Hailey Richards in 167th (22:35), Heather Smith 168th (22:35), Crystal Schaible 201st (23:16) and Mary Ellen Yaklic 209th (23:28).
