Ann Arbor has strong representation at Saturday’s state track meets

With eight team championships between Pioneer, Saline, Ypsilanti, Dexter and Gabriel Richard in the past three years alone, Washtenaw County has been well represented at the MHSAA boys and girls track and field finals.

According to area coaches, it’s no coincidence.

“I think the fact that the competition in this neighborhood has been very good not just this last year, but the past couple of years, helps us get ready as we go down to this thing,” said Pioneer girls coach Bryan Westfield, who will go for a fourth consecutive Division 1 title Saturday at East Kentwood High School.

Not only will the Pioneer and Saline girls face off with Romulus, Detroit Mumford and Flint Southwestern for the overall championship, but the sprint relay events in Division 1 will also have a decidedly local flavor.
