BROOKLYN — Devan John crossed the finish line and almost collapsed.

Running with the weight of being a two-time state champion on her shoulders, the Allendale senior fought through that and a strong wind to win her third consecutive Division 3 individual cross country state championship in a time of 18 minutes, 30.6 seconds on Saturday at Michigan International Speedway.

John is the fourth girl from the Lower Peninsula to win three state titles. The others are Kelloggsville’s Nicole Bush (2000-02), Rochester Adams’ Katie Boyles (1997-99) and Maple City Glen Lake’s Marissa Treece (2004-06).

“That’s pretty intense,” John said. “I did feel the pressure, but my run felt strong. The course was tough with the wind, but it was fast. And the weather was wonderful. This is pretty cool.”
