Allendale defeats Kent City 69-68; Track and Field

Advance Newspapers, April 27, 2009 11:55 p.m.

Allendale 69 , Kent City 68: Down by four points entering the last event of the day, the Allendale Falcons mile relay team of Jose Lugo, Chris Ruehs, Chris Titsma, and David Cheathan came through with the win to cap a thrilling league victory over Kent City. The win keeps the Allendale boys track team undefeated in dual meets this year.

“We had a lot of young guys step up for us in that meet, and that’s really been the story all year long. We have a lot of depth on this team, and that’s been a big key to our success,” explained Allendale head coach Brett Cataldo.

Some of those young contributors include sophomores Bryce Brown and Brandon Hart, and junior hurdlersTitsma, David White, and Logan Knoper, who also won the long jump against Kent City in what was just his second time ever competing in the event.

Senior sprinter Hershey Jackson took second in the 100 yard dash in his first competition since returning from a ruptured achilles tendon. And as has been the story through the year, the Falcon senior duo of Zach Hill and CJ Koop dominated the shot put and the discus with a pair of 1-2 finishes. Cataldo is extremely pleased with how the team’s coming around as tournaments near.

“We’re one meet away from taking the regular-season conference championship, and I’ve been very impressed with the team. The ability of the veterans to mesh with the younger athletes has been very encouraging.”

Next up for the Falcons is that final league meet as they travel to Kelloggsville to take on the Rockets. On Thursday Allendale has a double-dual lined up with Godwin Heights and Hopkins before closing the week Saturday at the West Ottawa Relays.
