COMSTOCK PARK — After he won the 200-meter state title, Todd Atchison summed up the Albion High School boys track team’s approach to winning its second consecutive Division 3 state championship.

“Individually, I did good, but it was more important to me to help the team,” Atchison said. “That’s what this was for.”

Atchison also anchored the state-champion 400 and 800 relay teams as the Wildcats produced nine all-state finishes and won four events Saturday.

Ryan Hopson earned Albion’s other state title in the long jump.

Albion finished with 61-1/2 points to second-place Allendale and Kent City, which each scored 43.

“The fact we were here again is a testament to how good our athletes are,” Albion coach Mike Jurasek said. “They’re the ones who put in the work and show up to practice day after day.”

Albion’s 400 relay team ran together in every meet this season, a rare feat considering the possibility of injury. It also won the school its third consecutive state title in the event.
