West Ottawa cross country runner Stephen Rich
Times can be deceiving in cross country, especially if you don’t know the layout of the course.
Richmond Park in Grand Rapids is a bear to run with a big hill and a sandy bottom.

West Ottawa runner Stephen Rich not only set a course record there Saturday during the Grand Rapids Union Red Hawk Invitational, he blistered it with a time of 19 minutes, 47 seconds.

No one had completed it in under 20 minutes before that. The old mark was 20:38.

Zeeland West cross country runner Rachele Schulist
The Carson City-Crystal Invitational is one of the top cross country races of the season, drawing more than 1,000 varsity runners of both genders in all four classes.

Zeeland West’s Rachele Schulist was the best of them in Class B Saturday by racing to a winning time of 18 minutes, 41.8 seconds. She finished the best of the 154 runners in the field.

This bodes well for Schulist’s future this fall. She’s an early candidate for a state title at Michigan International Speedway next month.
