Albion boys’ track rallies for state title

The Albion boys’ track and field team trailed heading into the final event of the MHSAA Division 4 state finals in Jenison. At that point, head coach Mike Jurasek told his team they could possibly tie for second place.

Instead, the results of the final race allowed the Wildcats to tie Big Rapids Crossroads Academy for Albion’s third state championship in the past four years.

"I’ve been coaching 25 years, and this was the most shocking and unrealistic meet that could’ve happened," Jurasek told the Enquirer. "We just had bad luck all day…. We’re losing points left and right. We felt we sunk, then we thought we had a chance."

Albion previously competed in Division 3, where it won back-to-back state title in 2008 and 2009. Jurasek was later named the Michigan Track and Field Coaches Association Coach of the Year.
