GRAND RAPIDS — The fallout from West Catholic’s announcement last week to suspend its 2010 boys cross country season and fire its coach includes Greg Meyer, arguably its most renowned alumnus, speaking out against the decision.

Meyer, a 1973 graduate and the last American [male] to win the Boston Marathon, strongly supports coach Denny Scully, who Meyer said rightly reported allegations to school leaders when the accusations surfaced, and strongly disagrees with how the school handled the situation.

The season was canceled in response to what principal Tom Maj said in a letter was “inappropriate and vulgar” behavior by team members. Detectives are investigating the allegations.
