Three Michigan football players running track against Ohio State

Some Michigan football players are getting another shot at Ohio State — in Saturday’s track meet against their archrivals.

A trio of freshmen — quarterback Denard Robinson, receiver Joe Reynolds and receiver Je’Ron Stokes — will run for the Wolverines.

Robinson was one of the fastest sprinters in Florida as a senior in the spring of 2009. He was timed at 4.32 seconds in the 40-yard dash, was on the 2008 state champion 4×100-meter relay team and finished third in the 100-meter dash at the 2008 Florida 4A state championships.

Reynolds was the MHSAA state champion in the 800-meter run as a junior.

Stokes was on the Pennsylvania all-state 4×200-meter relay team as a junior. He ran the 100-meter dash in 10.8 seconds, the 200-meter dash in 22.6 seconds and the 110-meter hurdles in 14.1 seconds.

Junior cornerback Troy Woolfolk was on the track team as well, a 2008 Big Ten outdoor champion as part of the 4×100-meter relay team.

GRAND RAPIDS — Greg Meyer doesn’t think he’s worthy of induction into the University of Michigan’s Hall of Honor.

His athletic credentials say otherwise.

Meyer, the last American to win the Boston Marathon, in 1983, was among eight new inductees honored Sunday.

“The tradition and the people who have been put into this Hall of Honor is incredible,” Meyer said. “When you go through the list of names inducted, it’s like, ‘Oh, man, how did they let me in?’ My mom (Rita) would say that, too. She’d say, ‘You let that snot nose in?’

“This is overwhelming to me. Come on, these are incredible, incredible people who are in this Hall of Honor.”

Meyer, 54, joins wrestler Rick Bay (1961-64), fellow track and field star Joanna Bullard (Mehall) (1980-83), gymnast Wendy Marshall (Martin) (1993-96), football and hockey standout Don Dufek Jr. (1973-76), diver Barbara Weinstein (McGrath) (1978-80), football’s Dave Brown (posthumous) (1971-74) and basketball’s Glen Rice (1985-89) as the Hall of Honor’s Class of 2010.

Dufek’s father is a 2006 Hall of Honor inductee who played fullback at U-M from 1948-50. He was the athletic director at Grand Valley State from 1972-76.

All William Gholston and Devin Gardner want is a logical explanation why they are no longer eligible to play high school athletics in Michigan.

Gholston is the Detroit Southeastern senior linebacker who committed to Michigan State and wants to play basketball or even swim for Southeastern right now.

Gardner is the Inkster quarterback who committed to Michigan and longs to help the Vikings basketball team reach the state semifinals, just like he did a year ago.

But according to the Michigan High School Athletic Association, their playing days as prepsters are over.

“I’m mad I can’t be playing,” Gholston said after watching his teammates lose to Detroit Pershing. “It’s frustrating because I can’t understand why.”
