PORTAGE – Many local cross country teams waited anxiously for the results of close races at Saturday’s regionals at Portage West Middle School.

Bridgman’s boys team wasn’t one of them.

The second-ranked Bees dominated the Division 4 race, placing five runners in the top seven. The Bees finished with 19 points, four points away from a perfect score and well ahead of second-place Lake Michigan Catholic’s 90.

Catholic also finished second in the girls’ race to qualify for the state finals. Bangor qualified both its teams in Division 3, with the boys tying Kalamazoo Hackett for first place but losing the regional title on the sixth-runner tiebreaker.

Other state-qualifying local teams included St. Joseph boys in Division 2, and Berrien Springs girls and Bloomingdale boys in Division 3.

Haslett’s Ian Hancke remained undefeated with another narrow win over St. Johns’ Morsi Rayyan.

But the No. 1-ranked Ionia boys team that breezed to a win that day struggled to a runner-up finish, 14 points behind No. 5 Ada Forest Hills Eastern.

“The guys ran hard, but we’re just not healthy right now,” said Chris Young, the Bulldog boys’ coach for the past 33 years. “Still, we made the state meet with a week to get more healthy, and that’s the important thing.”

Nick Wharry came in fifth place and Don Blight seventh for Ionia, whose ailing top runner Austin Alcala took 33rd place.

East Lansing lost out on the third and final team berth for the state finals by a single point to No. 4-ranked Grand Rapids Forest Hills Northern.
