RANGERS WIN CONFERENCE MEET: The Forest Hills Central girls cross country team hadn’t won a league title this decade, but that changed last Thursday. The Rangers ran through their O-K Black dual meet season undefeated, then topped the rest of the field at the conference meet with a team total of 28 points.
Competing at Rycenga Park near Spring Lake, FHC placed four runners in the top-10 and all seven of its varsity girls in the top-17 to outpace runner-up Reeths-Puffer by 41 points.
“Our top-7 all ran really well,” said coach Ryan Schipper. “They cam edown with colds or the flu this week, but they battled and most were close to their PRs, if they didn’t set a new PR. I was very impressed with how they ran.”

DUX BOYS SECOND, GIRLS THIRD IN GREEN: The Zeeland West cross country teams had a fine day at last Wednesday’s O-K Green conference meet at Ridge Point Church. The Dux boys placed second with 74 points, 11 behind Holland Christian’s winning total. The West girls finished with 94 points, behinds only Hamilton and Holland Christian.
“We ran very well,” said Dux coach Phil Hoover of his teams. “We knew going in which places we wanted and we pretty much went out and got those spots. These were our best finishes at a conference meet for Zeeland West, so I’m happy with how the season has gone.”
Seniors Chris Schulist and Tyler Bos led the West boys in third and fourth places respectively. Also placing in the team’s top-5 were junior Charlie Lewis, senior Troy Hammond, and freshman Jamin Lash.
Sophomore Rachele Schulist won her second O-K Green individual title, while senior Maddie Werley, sophomore Sherry Gaiser, and seniors Callie Kalinowski and Alissa DeRoo also ran well for the Dux girls team.
This Saturday, Zeeland West will compete in the Division 2 regional meet at Fellowship Greens Golf Course in Kentwood. The Schulist siblings will lead the Dux as they attempt to qualify for the state finals.

Sacred Heart Academy wanted to win it and so did Bridget Bennett.

In the end both got their wish Saturday as the Irish girls won the Michigan Class D Cross Country Coaches Association state title at Buck’s Run Golf Course, finishing atop the 31-team field with 97 total points.

Bennett also had a day as she won the girls race via her second-fastest time of the season, 18:48. She also won the race last season coming in with a time of 18:40.

“I just wanted to go out and feel that first mile,” said Bennett, who finished nearly 50 seconds ahead of second-place finisher Brianne Feldpausch of Fowler. “I guess I was trying to run a little faster than usual because I didn’t want anyone catching me, that’s not a good feeling when that happens. I feel good about winning it but we wanted to win the team title too.”

And win it they did by having all five of their runners finish in the top 41.

On Saturday, area teams will travel to regional sites, with a spot in the state meet up for grabs.

The top three teams and 15 individuals at each regional will qualify for the state meet.

The field at Goodells County Park will be especially interesting.

Several local teams, including St. Clair, Marine City, Marysville, Croswell Lexington and Yale will all be on hand.

“As far as the team portion goes, our regional is really good,” Marysville girls cross country Coach Steve Rogers said. “Marine City and St. Clair are really good and Yale is also good. At this point, anything can happen.”
