Lakers’ cross country continues strong season

Spring Lake’s girls cross country squad captured another first-place finish at the second Lakes Eight Jamboree on Tuesday, held in driving rain and wind at Orchard View High School.

Led by senior India Peek Jensen’s first-place showing, the Lakers outdistanced runner-up Ludington by a comfortable 40 points, 32-72. Fruitport was third with 77 points and Grant finished with 86.

“As a team we are making great strides each week,” Spring Lake coach Aaron Andres said. “Each girl knew that this was going to be a difficult meet. Ludington has improved each meet we have raced the past couple of weeks. Fruitport also ran a strong race and we had to stay focused and make sure we had no letdowns.”

With four finishers in the top 10, the Lakers wouldn’t allow a letdown to happen. Aside from Peek Jensen, sophomore Halle Billinghurst also had a strong performance by placing third (20:32.2); senior Hannah Nyboer was sixth (20:49.0) and Rosie Seitz took seventh (20:53.3).

The Michigan Intercollegiates is a prime race for many cross country programs, strong teams will be on tap for the race and create some very good competition.

HARTLAND — For years, the Hartland cross country teams were afterthoughts in the Kensington Valley Conference.

But, a couple of years into the regimes of Matt Gutteridge (boys) and Mary Rinkus (girls), the Eagles are showing signs of running their way into the now-KLAA West elite.

The girls are closer than the boys, as evidence by Pinckney’s 26-29 victory.

Avery Evenson, the two-sport (she also is on the swim team) fall standout for Hartland, won by another large margin, clocking in at 18 minutes, 21 seconds, surprising, among others, Pinckney’s Jessica Wines.

“I didn’t really know about her,” Wines said. “I knew (Hartland) had a fast runner. I wasn’t expecting her to be that fast.”

Wines, who was second in 19:10, was in the position of achieving one goal only to find another was well ahead of her.

“I had never beaten Anna (Pasternak) before,” Wines said, “and I was trying to get past her.”

She succeeded, beating Pasternak, whose season debut was delayed by injuries until last week, by 12 seconds.

Hartland has been paced by three freshmen most of the season. Besides Evenson, Kaitlin Halonen and Alyssa Pumford also finished in the top 10 overall.

“I’m liking what I see out of Kaitlin,” Hartland coach Mary Rinkus said. “She’s really stepped it up. Alyssa is right there with Kaitlin. Those two are racing very well together.”

The Pinckney boys won easily, 19-42, with Tanner Pesonen crossing the finish line first in 16:01. Both Pinckney squads improved to 4-0 in the KLAA West, while both Hartland teams are 1-3.

But, like Rinkus, Gutteridge says he likes the progress his team has made.

“It’s Pinckney,” Gutteridge said. “We knew what we were getting into. We had another sophomore break 17 for the first time, so right now my front two runners are sophomores, and my next pack has a sophomore and a freshman in it. We’re getting good leadership and we’re running hard. I was happy with today.”

At this time of year, times are of the essence, the lower the better, and the Hartland coach likes what he sees, very much.
(2 of 2)

“We’re back to where we were at the end of last season. It’s still early October. We’re not racing as much as we had last year, so I think we have a real chance to run fast at the end of the year. Maybe we can sneak up on someone at the regional. Who knows? I think my kids believe they have a shot in every race they run, and as long as they have that attitude, let’s go have some fun.”

The Hartland girls have plenty of fun set up for the coming week, with another shot at Pinckney at Saturday’s Portage Invitational along with Brighton, then a season-ending dual at Brighton next week.

“Pinckney’s got a real strong program, and to race them as well as we did today, I feel pretty optimistic as we go toward regionals,” she said.

Hartland’s boys won’t be going, but both Pinckney squads will be there.

“I think we’re going to be really ready for Saturday,” Carney said. “I think it’s going to be exciting for both teams. We have Milford next Tuesday, so we have two big meets in a row, and this was no small competition today. Especially for the girls.”
