Durand’s David Madrigal breaks own school cross country record in Linden Classic

Bill Khan | The Flint Journal, September 26, 2009 5:18 p.m.

LINDEN, Michigan – While it’s cool to dominate races, David Madrigal accomplishes more when the competition is the toughest.

The Durand senior, who is accustomed to running alone at the front, was pushed by two All-State runners Saturday in the Linden Classic cross country meet.

The result was a hard-fought victory and a school-record time of 15:48, the fastest by a Flint-area runner this season. He broke his own mark of 15:48.2, which he set while placing fifth in the state Division 3 meet last year.

Madrigal had to fend off a challenge from Linden’s Jake Hord and Chesaning’s Trevor Denton, who stuck close to him until halfway through the 3.1-mile race.

Madrigal put on a surge in a blistering second mile that enabled him to win by 18 seconds over Hord (16:06) and 35 over Denton (16:23). First-year runner Glenn Cosey, a Carman-Ainsworth senior and basketball standout, was a surprising fourth in 16:40.

“I was looking forward to running against Jake again,” Madrigal said.

Saginaw Heritage boys, Bay City Western girls take top spots in Delta Cross Country Invitational

Saginaw Heritage boys, Bay City Western girls take top spots in Delta Cross Country Invitational

The Bay City Times, September 26, 2009 5:47 p.m.

Normally, a cool, dreary day like Saturday wouldn’t make for a good sporting event.

But for cross country, that’s just how they like it.

At the Al Kayner Invitational at Delta College, both boys and girls saw lower than normal times, with the weather being a contributing factor.

“Usually it’s around 85 degrees for this meet,” Bay City Western coach Mike Nesbitt said. “Today’s temperature was huge, because you’re body doesn’t have to fight to keep cool. This is how we like it.”

“What has it rained, like a half inch in the last month? That definitely plays into it,” Saginaw Heritage coach Gary Loubert said.
