Happy News – Texas Teen Wins Team State Championship – By Herself!

Bonnie Richardson, from tiny Rochelle, Texas (population 600), has accomplished what no other Texas high school track and field athlete has ever achieved: back-to-back team state championships by herself.

Typically humble,Richardson didn’t get too excited. “My family already did the math,” Richardson said while waiting for her celebratory prime rib sandwich at Red Robin restaurant. “They were jumping up and down; it was kind of embarrassing.” Since Rochelle High School has no track, Richardson, who is this year’s entire girls’ track team, practices at nearby Brady High School.

How does she feel? “I’m tired and glad it’s over,” Richardson said. “High school’s officially over.” The valedictorian in a class of 14 at Brady High School, Richardson has committed to Texas A&M. “I hope not to look stupid because of the age difference with some of the athletes I’ll be competing against,” Richardson said. “I’m playing catch-up.”

WILLIAMSTON INDIVIDUAL STATE TRACK RESULTS

Disappointment, drama, dramatic, dynamic, dynamite, dual, duel, and a pretty darn good day; that’s what was witnessed by the dozens of Hornet faithful at Zeeland’s Track and Field facility Saturday.

It began with an innocent enough 100 meter dash preliminary; the starter shoots his gun then shots again signaling a false start by someone – that someone was our speedy and medalist hopeful Ryan Brooks. Then discus thrower Ethan Wirth misses making it to the finals by 2”, and long jumper Tim Reynolds misses the finals by 1”! Hurdler Chad Rhiness made it to the semis in the 110 meter highs but missed getting to the finals by just 10ths of a second. Molly Maynard just couldn’t get herself going in the high jump and missed a medal. Senior high jumper Dale Williams was up against the toughest competition in the state and didn’t get to the 6’4” height to put himself into medal contention. It is definitely a game of inches or less and tenths and sometimes 100ths of seconds – especially at this level of competition.

However, he was more nervous the previous day as a participant in the Division 1 boys track and field state championship meet at East Kentwood High School.

A first-time state qualifier, Johnson competed in the 110-meter hurdles and placed second behind Renaldo Powell of Wayne Memorial. Powell won in 14.13, while Johnson was right behind at 14.28.

“When I heard I was going to be class valedictorian, I was really shocked because I was number two in the class,” said Johnson, who is headed to Texas A&M on an academic scholarship. “It was a great honor for me and I was really excited, and you can only imagine how excited my parents were for me. All I had to worry about was saying a speech at graduation.

“I think my speech went really well and the crowd responded very well to it,” he said. “I think I was more nervous about the state (track) meet though because I had been dreaming about that meet for four years.”
