East Kentwood — Any great athlete wants a team’s title hopes to fall on his/her shoulders in the waning moments of a contest.
At Saturday’s Division 1 track and field championships, that responsibility fell on Romulus’ Christienne Linton and her 1,600-meter relay teammates.
With the girls title on the line and Romulus trailing by a point heading into the last event, the tandem of Linton, Kanaya Williams, Britnee Bishop and Malita Rutherford finished in 3:52.53, nearly two seconds faster than second-place Rockford’s.
The victory gave Romulus 10 points to finish with 38, one point better than Rockford (37) and two better than Ann Arbor Pioneer (36).
The title is the first ever for Romulus in track and field.
Linton was the hero for Romulus, scoring 28 points by herself and having a hand in all 38 of the team’s points. She won the long jump (18-8.25), 300 hurdles (42.86, Division 1 record), anchored the 1,600 relay and finished second in the 100 hurdles (14.19).
