Plenty of meet records will be at risk at this year’s James R. Selby Memorial Track Classic.

Five competitors have already posted would-be record performances in their respective events and will try to repeat those feats beginning at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at Jackson High School.

Both pole vault records could fall as Christina Watson of Stockbridge has already cleared a foot more than the meet record of 10 feet, and Chris Holda of Michigan Center has less of a cushion but has gone 11⁄4 inches over the 14-11 record.

Also, the boys and girls 300-meter hurdles records have been beaten this season by Michael Parker of Michigan Center and Jaelynn Pryor of Jackson, last year’s girls Most Outstanding Performer.

She won the Division 2 state championship in the 200 and finished second in the 100 hurdles.

Lagios, Bronchos dominate boys’ meet to earn second straight title

Ortonville — In many ways, Brendan Lagios mirrors his Holly varsity boys track squad.

For years, Holly’s track program has been respected, but seemingly a step out of the limelight. Even with last year’s Metro League championship, it seemed respect wasn’t coming the program’s way very readily entering this year.

But that didn’t bother the Bronchos. They answered by doing what they did best all year on Wednesday at Brandon High School during the Metro League Meet — they dominated the competition.

And Lagios led that charge. Lagios was a part of four Metro League championship events, helping the Bronchos earn a first-place point total of 143.5 points, easily outdistancing second-place Fenton (109.5). And while Lagios has always been looked upon as a solid contributor on the Bronchos’ team, it seemed it took regionals and the Metro League meet for most of the area to take notice.

ALGONAC — Thank you, Algonac girls track team, for not making me run.

Well, let me rephrase that, because I did run. A little bit, anyway.

Thank you, Algonac girls track team, for not timing anything I did or making me run hard for more than about 30 yards.

Because let me tell you, I’ve never been so scared heading to an assignment.

It had nothing to do with the threat of losing to a girl in a race. In fact, I pretty much had become resigned to the fact that if they made me run anything over 200 meters — who am I kidding, anything over 100 meters, I probably would end up losing, simply because
