Grand Rapids, MI —

With enough points to win the team Division 2 regional title already in hand, the Hamilton boys track team did not need to win the 1,600-meter relay, the final event of the day.

The Hawkeyes went out and won that event anyway as Troy Sneller, Dakota Sale, David Ptacek and Robert Field clocked in at 3:28.44 to edge runnerup Zeeland West by about a second.
The team standings were not that close.

Hamilton, with 128 points, outdistanced runnerup Zeeland West (80 points) to win the Division 2 team title. Coach Kevin Spotts said it was part of a season-long master plan.

“This was one of our goals as we move into the team state meet next week with our senior-dominated team,” Spotts said. “We ended up with 65 guys on the team this year and we feel like everyone of them is part of this.”

And apparently the Livonia Churchill and Livonia Franklin girls track and field teams bring out the best in each other as well.

Friday’s MHSAA Division 1 regional went right down to the final event with Churchill repeating as champion by a razor-thin margin of 122-119.5 over the Patriots.

Westland John Glenn finished third in the 16-team field with 69 points followed by Detroit Cass Tech and Livonia Stevenson rounding out the top five with 65 and 60, respectively.

St. Joseph’s boys track and field team won two of the first three events in Friday’s Division 2 regional at Sturgis.

Whether or not that strong start yields a regional crown will not be decided until this afternoon as thunder and lightning forced the meet to be suspended at around the halfway mark.

Seven boys events and six girls events had been completed when the meet was put in a delay due to thunder at about 6:45 p.m. A little more than 30 minutes later officials suspended the meet until noon today.

The girls pole vault, which had already been postponed until today, will start at 1 p.m.

Through seven events Vicksburg leads the boys meet with 46.5 points. St. Joseph is second with 44 and defending champion Benton Harbor is third with 33. South Haven is tied for fifth with Otsego with 20 and Lakeshore is seventh with 17.

Canton — It’s been quite a season for girls athletics at Livonia Franklin, and Senneca Scott has played a big part in it.

Scott, a junior, was a starter on the basketball team that reached the Class A final and on Friday Scott was again at the forefront in the Division 1 track and field regional.

Scott tied a personal best by placing first in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 16.09 seconds. She also ran on the 3,200 relay team that qualified for the state meet by finishing second with a time of 9:49.73.

Franklin’s softball team is ranked No. 8 in Division 1.

JENISON — For several minutes Friday, Cody Osterhouse was getting the rock-star treatment.

Heck, with his long, curly, blond locks of hair, the Portage Northern junior even looked the part of a 1970s or ’80s celebrity. Think Willie Aames, who played Tommy Bradford on the show, “Eight is Enough.”

“My dad says, ‘As long as it’s not in your eyes, it’s fine with me,’” said Osterhouse, who had no trouble keeping his sights set on the lead pack in the 1,600-meter run before overtaking it for a surprising victory at the Division 1 track and field regional at Jenison High School.

What a season it has been for the Sparta Spartans, and it’s not over yet. Both the Sparta boys and girls track and field teams competed at the MHSAA Regional meet at Coopersville High School, and both teams ended the day as regional champions. Although both teams came in on a high from conference championships, neither had an easy time securing the regional title. The Sparta girls had an easier time securing the meet by outscoring second place Forest Hills Eastern 120-100.33. On the boys side the meet came down to the final event; the Spartans third place finish in the 1600 meter relay scored just enough to break defending champion Whitehall’s heart, 83-81. The girls earned their second regional title in three years, whereas the boys won their first regional title since 1986 – this is the first time in school history that both the boys and girls teams have held the regional title in the same year.

HOLLY, Michigan — Holly senior Brendan Lagios has competed in enough big events this school year that he wasn’t going to be intimidated by anyone.

Not even a defending state champion.

So, when Lagios made it through the final turn in the 800-meter run, he seized the opportunity before him. He exploded down the final straightaway to pass Joe Reynolds of Rochester Adams and win the metric half mile in the Division 1 regional track and field meet Friday at Holly.

Lagios won with a time of 1:53.71, faster than the 1:53.92 that Reynolds ran to win the state meet last season. Reynolds was second Friday in 1:55.70.

“Everybody said he was the best,” Lagios said. “To be the best, you have to beat the best.
