Troy girls running with the wind
Troy girls running with the wind

It was two years ago when Troy enjoyed one of its best girls track and field seasons in school history. At each big meet, the Colts were consistently near the top.

Although still very competitive last season — the Colts did win a Division 1 regional championship — they fell down the ladder slightly and did not crack the top 10 at the state meet. Two years ago Troy was sixth at state and placed 12th last year.

All indications point to the Colts being another high-level team this year.

Troy is coming off a fine third-place at the loaded Detroit Shumake Relays at Detroit Renaissance and entering Tuesday’s showdown at Rochester undefeated in duals. Both teams are 4-0 and are quite capable of becoming top-10 teams in the state.

GRAND RAPIDS — Dick Pindar hunkered down, patted the shiny bleachers at Eagle Stadium and shook his head.

No, this was not storied Houseman Field; this was not the site of track and field in the City League since 1935.

But with the nearly century-old league disbanding a year ago, having the seven former member schools gathered for a reunion meet anywhere was just fine.

“I’m an old goat and used to Houseman,” said Pindar, 78, who was a half-miler and miler at Union. “I have watched my kids and grandkids run in the City League, too. It’s good these schools could get together again.”

MGoBlue: Women’s Track Duo Achieve Qualifying Times at Stanford
Next U-M Event: Fri-Sat., May 8-9 — host Len Paddock Invitational (Ferry Field)

PALO ALTO, Calif. — Sophomore Danielle Tauro (Manahawkin, N.J./Southern Regional) and sophomore Kaitlyn Peale (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) each met NCAA regional-qualifying standards on Saturday (May 2) at the Payton Jordan Invitational, hosted by Stanford at Cobb Track and Angell Field. Tauro met the qualifying standard in the 1,500-meter run, while Peale hit the standard in the 5,000-meter run.

In the 1,500 meters, Tauro finished third in section two and 14th overall with a time of 4:18.25. Tauro was less than a second behind section two winner Alicia Follmar of host Stanford (4:17.63). Former Wolverine Anna Willard (2007) posted a time of 4:06.90 to win the 1,500 meters overall.

Peale finished 27th in the 5,000-meter run while meeting the regional-qualifying standard, clocking in at 16:41.22. Colorado’s Jennifer Barringer won the event in 15:07.64.

The Maize and Blue will make its lone home appearance of the 2009 outdoor season next Friday and Saturday (May 8-9) when it hosts the Len Paddock Invitational. Competition will begin at 11 a.m. on Friday and resume at 10 a.m. on Saturday at Ferry Field.

Brinn has a fast day at Allegan

Sunday, May 3rd, 2009

Tommy Brinn ran a great 400 at the Allegan Invite. His time of 47.69 leaves him a little over a second behind the state record of 46.55 set by Darnell Hall of Detroit Pershing at the Midwest Meet of Champions in 1990. Can we have a second state record set on the boys side this year in addition to Zack Hill’s shot put? There are a few girls records on the line as well perhaps this year including the mile and the pole vault. It’s a great year for track and field despite the odd weather to start.

GRAND RAPIDS — Did you know the City League’s illustrious track and field competitive run began in 1928 at Garfield Park as a regional event?

Or how about this one: After using South Field for some of its events, too, the City League meet finally moved to Houseman Field in 1935, where it stayed for more than seven decades before the league disbanded after the 2007-08 school year.

It’s facts like these, as well as results and stars and championship teams, that Dave Wood knows.

Wood, a 1972 graduate of Union who still holds the City League record in the 1,600-meter run (4 minutes, 12.3 seconds), is making sure everyone knows, too.

Currently the track and field coach at Aquinas College, Wood is writing a book about the history of track and field in the City League.

He will include historical information on Houseman Field, as well as all City meet results since the league’s inception 80 years ago.
