ALLEGAN — It’s awfully tough to upstage Tommy Brinn, but Otsego junior Kelsey Kuipers gave her Bulldogs track and field peer a pretty good run during Friday’s Allegan Invitational.

“No, that’s almost impossible,” she said with a laugh, while trying not to blush.

Kuipers claimed first place in three events, including a school-record effort in the 200-meter dash, to share the spotlight with Brinn, a University of Nebraska-bound standout who established three Allegan invite records.

The Otsego girls and boys squads both posted top-five finishes in the 16-team event.

Battle Creek Lakeview ran away with the girls title, totaling 128 points, 44 more than runner-up Hamilton. Sturgis (67), Vicksburg (59) and Otsego (57) rounded out the top five in the girls competition.

On the boys side, Hamilton (101) held off hard-charging Vicksburg (89) for the championship.

Lakeview (75), St. Joseph (71) and Otsego (64) placed third, fourth and fifth, respectively.

Trojans finally first
Trojans finally first

Troy Ruel | Muskegon Chronicle, May 01, 2009 10:13 p.m.

The last four years, the Fruitport girls track and field team has been stuck at second best.

As the team scores had been announced, marking the end of another Greater Muskegon Athletic Association track and field meet, head coach Randy Johnson and his Trojans could only watch in the past as Reeths-Puffer celebrated just yards away.

That all came to an end Friday night under the lights at Orchard View High School.

Fruitport used its balance, team depth and Finnish foreign-exchange student Mona Auervolle to end the Rockets’ reign and claim its first-ever city championship.

Ann Arbor Gabriel Richard girls track team not intimidated by bigger opponents

Jeff Arnold | The Ann Arbor News, May 01, 2009 10:29 p.m.

From the beginning of the season, it has been about the mindset.

Gabriel Richard High School girls track coach Carl Brock had T-shirts printed with a target displayed prominently along with the words, “We Know.”

As the defending Division 3 state champions, the Fighting Irish know the bar of expectation has been raised.

But they also realize that despite losing only three members from last spring’s title team, a No. 9 ranking in the most recent state polls and an unblemished dual meet record this year, they have continued to fly under the radar.

Allendale’s Zack Hill sets state record in shot put

Steve Kaminski | The Grand Rapids Press, May 02, 2009 9:42 p.m.
HOLLAND — Zack Hill’s mother brings her son lunch to school every time the Allendale High School senior breaks his own record in the shot put throw.

Jennifer Hill said after Saturday’s 43rd annual West Ottawa Von Ins Relays that come Monday, she is not only bringing Hill lunch, but his teammates as well.

Special times call for special measures.

“We called up Vitale’s and asked them if they could bring in pizza,” Jennifer said.

Dux run to seven victories to claim boys track title
Holland Township, MI —

The timing, coach Phil Hoover said, worked out pretty well for the Zeeland West boys’ track team.
At the 43rd West Ottawa Von Ins Relays, the times weren’t too bad, either.

In Division 2, the Zeeland West boys took first place in seven of the eight running events and scored 196 points, to beat Grand Rapids West Catholic (87 points) and the rest of the field.
Allendale senior Zack Hill surpassed T.J. Duckett in the state record book when he tossed the shot put 60 feet, 1⁄2 inch, one-half inch farther than the old record. That helped Allendale win that event with a combined 115-53⁄4, shattering the old meet record of 102-31⁄4 set by Montague in 1996.
