KENTWOOD, Michigan — Jeff Kline lived vicariously through Flushing teammate Ryan Staley, then found out for himself what it’s like to be a state champion.

After watching Staley win the pole vault, Kline went out and broke the all-class record for a state track and field meet by going 24 feet, 1 inch in the long jump at the Division 1 meet Saturday at East Kentwood.

KENTWOOD - Nine hours after it all started, the Division 1 girls track and field championship hinged on the final 400 yards of the final event.

That’s when Romulus senior Christienne Linton, the star of the MHSAA finals held Saturday at East Kentwood High School, blew past the field for the 1,600-meter relay title and Rockford slipped ahead of Pioneer in the final stretch. And with those results added to a day-long tally, the teams finished an identical 1-2-3 in the final standings at one of the most tightly-contested state finals in history.

Pioneer entered the final event in third place, three points behind first-place Rochester and one behind Waterford Mott, but in the driver’s seat because neither of the leaders had a team in the final heat of the 1,600.

COMSTOCK PARK — After he won the 200-meter state title, Todd Atchison summed up the Albion High School boys track team’s approach to winning its second consecutive Division 3 state championship.

“Individually, I did good, but it was more important to me to help the team,” Atchison said. “That’s what this was for.”

Atchison also anchored the state-champion 400 and 800 relay teams as the Wildcats produced nine all-state finishes and won four events Saturday.

Ryan Hopson earned Albion’s other state title in the long jump.

Albion finished with 61-1/2 points to second-place Allendale and Kent City, which each scored 43.

“The fact we were here again is a testament to how good our athletes are,” Albion coach Mike Jurasek said. “They’re the ones who put in the work and show up to practice day after day.”

Albion’s 400 relay team ran together in every meet this season, a rare feat considering the possibility of injury. It also won the school its third consecutive state title in the event.

COMSTOCK PARK — Zack Hill is back on top of the mountain.

His competition is farther back in the valley.

Hill, Allendale’s senior muscle man, wrapped up his record-smashing high school career by repeating as state champion in the Division 3 shot put and discus — and in even more dominating fashion than a year ago when he set state meet marks in both.

“I’m pleased,” said the Michigan State-bound Hill. “I had no idea how far I could go with this. It was just up to the good Lord. I did as good as I could have done.”

The food is fantastic and the camaraderie is even better at the Canton boys track-and-field team’s annual season-ending picnic at

But the highlight of the festivities is the naming of the following year’s captains — a time-honored ritual that draws the attention of all attendees.

Last spring, the honorees — who were selected by a vote of their teammates and coaches — were seniors Sherif Hassanien, Josh Hurst, Ryan Randall and Eddie Koelzer, a fantastic foursome who have more than lived up to the awesome responsibilities that were thrust upon them.

“This is a great group of captains,” said Canton coach Bob Richardson. “They’ve really lived up to their leadership roles, both on the track and with the way they’ve helped make the rest of the team better.”

Koelzer is a four-year member of the track team and three-sport athlete, who has also earned letters in swimming and football. A standout pole vaulter, Koelzer said the feeling of being named captain was as prominent as any medal he’s one the past four years.

Okemos girls second in CAAC meet

HOLT - Okemos was right on the heels of the Grand Ledge Comets during both the dual meet and the CAAC Blue Track and Field championships on May 20 at Holt High School.

But the depth of the Comets program and the strength of their distance runners that made the difference in the meet.

Grand Ledge eventually pulled away to win but not without a huge challenge from the Chieftains.

Grand Ledge sealed the win in the 16th event of the day, the 3200-meter run as they finished two, three and four to pick up 18 team points.

That was more than the Chiefs could counter with as the Comets won the meet and the league title with 130.50 points. Okemos was a solid second place with 108 points.
