“We had some pretty solid performances, especially in the throws and the distance events,” Coach Lew Page said. “Our senior leadership and overall depth are going to make this a tough team to beat this season. I’m optimistic that we’re only going to get stronger as the year progresses, and hopefully we’ll challenge for the league championship.”

Quick-change artists

Excelling in sports isn’t the only skill for four unusual Monroe High female athletes.
Abby McCollum, Hanna Firchau and Jenna and Jessica Sexton also have learned to become quick-change artists.
All four are competing in soccer and track and field for the Trojans this spring, an unusual marriage of sports that somehow works.
Their multi-tasking skills were put to the task last week when Monroe had a track meet at Dearborn Edsel Ford and a home soccer match with Garden City on the same afternoon.
McCollum and Firchau compete in field events and were able to leave the track meet early. But the Sexton twins are runners and are needed for nearly the entire meet. Jessica already had won an event for Monroe.
They arrived at the soccer match with only 10 minutes remaining yet set up McCollum for the winning goal in a 3-2 Mega Red triumph. Firchau also figured prominently in the win.

KENTWOOD — Rachel Herald had no trouble dealing with the pressure.

The Rockford junior edged East Kentwood’s Aubree Suor in the high jump with a leap of 5 feet, 4 inches, as both teams and a majority of the crowd that stuck around on a cool and windy Tuesday night at East Kentwood High School moved to the high jump pit to watch.

It was the last event of the evening in the teams’ key O-K Red Conference dual, and Herald’s win gave the Rams a hard-fought 70-67 victory against the Falcons. …

At least that seemed to be the case for Howell’s Clay Woll and Brighton’s Josh Partridge Tuesday at Brighton.

Both juniors, Partridge edged Woll in the 1,600-meter run, before Woll returned the favor, holding off Partridge down the stretch to win the 3,200 in a Kensington Lakes Activities Association West Division track dual Tuesday.
