Dux down Chix in rainy track meet in Zeeland

ZEELAND - The weather in West Michigan last Tuesday was very well-suited for ducks: cold, wet and windy. The Dux of Zeeland West, like their mascot, didn’t seem to mind as both the West boys and girls track teams defeated their rivals from Zeeland East.
The West boys defeated East 99-32, while the Lady Dux scored 93 points to the Chix’ 43. Zeeland West boys coach Phil Hoover said he’s held practices in similar weather conditions to Tuesday’s 40 degree temps and driving rain in the past but not a meet.
“Practices, yeah, but not a dual meet,” said Hoover. “Not since I’ve coached. It can go either way (whether or not to postpone a meet). Now that it’s done, I’m glad we got it in.”
First-year Dux girls coach Nate VandeGuchte said his team focused on the mental aspect of track and field and on doing its best no matter what the conditions.
